Pink on the Fourth of July?
What do the color pink and the Fourth of July have in common? At first glance, it may seem like an odd pairing, but both represent an emblem of freedom.

The Fourth of July is a day to commemorate America’s separation from Great Britain due to our forefathers, who signed the Declaration of Independence. The color pink signifies the striving for liberation from breast cancer through a movement founded by Susan G. Komen for the Cure. These two facets of freedom both require dedication, commitment and perseverance to abandon oppression and embrace liberty.

The Fourth is usually celebrated with fireworks, picnics, parades and family gatherings. This year, F&M is going to pay tribute to these emblems of freedom by joining forces with the Komen Orange County Affiliate to kick off the first-ever “Pink Checking” program on Independence Day. For every new qualified checking account opened, F&M will donate $125 – the average cost of a mammogram – to the Komen Orange County Affiliate. Due to state budget cuts, fewer women have access to lifesaving breast health care and need funding to help identify the disease early on.

To commemorate this march toward independence that affects one in eight women in her lifetime, F&M Bank is walking with breast cancer survivors in the Huntington Beach Fourth of July parade this Sunday. Join F&M Bank in supporting the largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors in Komen’s endeavor to find a cure and ultimately freedom.
