My $217,000 Joyride
OC is the Lamborghini capital of the world.
BY KIMBERLY A. PORRAZZO
When the folks at Lamborghini got wind of our holiday gift guide for business execs, they called to offer a few items for our consideration (take a look at the gorgeous flight jacket on page 26).
“Love it,” I replied to their pitch. The buttery leather jacket is perfect for the person who loves the Lamborghini brand but just can’t afford the car.

“Send over some photos,” I said.
“Can we send over a car, too?” the rep asked.
(Pause) “You mean…a real one?”
Two weeks later, a stealth-bomber gray 2008 Gallardo Spyder was delivered for my 3-day test drive. To put this in perspective, you should know that I drive a 1991 Mercury Grand Marquis (me and all the men in OC age 70 and over). I’m in the market for a new car, but because my husband and I have 2 sons in college, we’ve been holding off on a purchase. (It’s also because of our 2 sons that I slept with the Lamborghini keys under my pillow!)
Driving the $217,000 car was a rush – a real ego trip. The way heads turned, you’d have thought I was a blonde. People on the street nudged each other as I passed, mouthing “Lamborghini” and pointing at the car. This was an understandable reaction because even though more Lamborghinis are sold in OC than anywhere in the world, you still don’t pull up next to one every day.
For 3 days, I arrived early everywhere I went. The speedometer goes to 220 mph. I got it up to – let’s just say a tad more than the speed limit on Pacific Coast Highway.
If a Lamborghini isn’t in your budget, check out our cover story for some other great holiday gifts.
