LET’S JUST SAY, ‘THANKS FOR THE GENEROSITY’
Your observation of being less concerned as to why major donors give and (more) thankful that they do is an everyday mantra for me (Publisher’s Page, “C’mon, it’s not about the ‘why,’” Feb. 28).
I prefer to think of major gifts as an investment in our future. Like most savvy businesspeople, these donors want to see a community return on their investments. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is criticized for how much the organization gives, compared to what it makes. Is it ever going to be enough to satisfy what others think should be given? Or how?
We, in nonprofit development departments who seek to involve supporters with our organizations, are simply not in a position to judge what the motivation is to give. In today’s economy, we just gratefully say, “Thank you! Thank you!”
