Many Shades of Green: Diversity and Distribution of California's Green Jobs found that the energy generation segment, which includes the solar sector, expanded both in the county and the nation in the period – employment opportunities grew by nearly 180 percent in O.C.
What's more, the region has a strong green transportation representation: These positions jumped by 1,875 percent in the 13-year period.
"Orange County and the Los Angeles area are well positioned for green transportation jobs in terms of both alternative fuels and motor vehicles and equipment," says Collaborative Economics Chairman and CEO Doug Henton.
Jobs in the energy-efficiency sector also increased 78 percent.
Statewide, green businesses saw a 45 percent uptick in the period, while such jobs jumped by 36 percent. This far outpaces the state's overall job situation, which only experienced 13 percent growth.
“Green technology has the potential to do for energy, the world’s largest sector by revenue, what IT did for communications. As a first mover, we are well positioned to capture the fast-emerging multibillion-dollar global green market,” adds Henton.
