Surf City USA event takes place in February, continued ...
Event officials are relying on the draw of the scenic oceanfront route, social atmosphere and large participation from women and families to boost its status.
“Wave starts, easy automobile access, reasonable entry fees, an amazing medal and unique surf-themed entertainment combine to create a nonthreatening atmosphere that appeals to thousands of novice and expert runners alike,” says Surf City Race director Kathy Kinane, a competitive runner and founding member of Running USA.
Among the other highlights: a kids race; a two-day Active Lifestyle Beach Expo; beer gardens; and Super Bowl parties.
This year's event takes place on Feb. 7. The marathon kicks off at 6:30 a.m., followed by the half marathon at 7:45 a.m. Both begin at the corner of Pacific Coast Highway and Huntington Street.
