Launched this year, Standup for the Cure raises funds for the Orange County Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The organization held its first event in May 2012, where SUP instructors led 700 paddlers through Newport Harbor, earning more than $60,000 and setting the world record for the largest standup paddleboard lesson.

“When we thought of starting a Standup Paddleboard event to raise awareness for breast cancer detection, we never dreamt we would set a world record and win an award,” said Judie Vivian, founder of Standup for the Cure. “A mammogram saved my life and the Standup Paddling community is so supportive! I just wanted to help others.”

The second annual event will occur on May 4, 2013, in Newport Beach at the Newport Dunes.
