Black and Orange Ball returns to aid medical research
The Orange County Cystic Fibrosis Foundation will host its annual Halloween fundraiser, the Black and Orange Ball, on Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Crowne Plaza Anaheim Resort. The event’s guest speaker will be Noelle Kirby, who lives with cystic fibrosis.
Proceeds from the event will be used to fund research for cures and treatments of cystic fibrosis, which has recently seen a major step forward in the FDA approval of Kalydeco, a drug that gives hope to 4 percent of those living with Cystic Fibrosis.
“Kalydeco represents a major development and can significantly help people with one mutation of the disease,” said Michael Shumard, executive director of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Southern California Chapter. “But the majority of those suffering from Cystic Fibrosis continue to fight for their lives and count on our work to help find a cure.”
The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation was established in 1955, when the average survival age of a child living with the lung and digestive disease was 7 years old. Now, with medical advances and drugs like Kalydeco, the average survival age is 37.
“We are honored to host an annual ball that funds medical research allowing children and adults to live longer, healthier lives with cystic fibrosis,” Shumard said. “The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has been behind all major medical advances to provide the means to cure and control the disease, and lifesaving drugs like Kalydeco only come to fruition thanks to our sponsors and the funds raised at events like the Halloween ball.”
Shumard also thanked a number of companies for providing sponsorships for the event, which will include a costume party, dinner and auction. “The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has been behind all major medical advances to provide the means to cure and control the disease, and lifesaving drugs like Kalydeco only come to fruition thanks to our sponsors and the funds raised at events like the Halloween ball.”
