Fisker to establish new technical center in Midwest
Anaheim-based Fisker Automotive is planning to launch a new Technical Center in the Midwestern U.S. in the coming year, identifying southeastern Michigan as a potential site. The new center will be integral to the luxury green automaker’s development and launch of its second model, the Fisker Atlantic.
“This important step signals our commitment to bringing the Fisker Atlantic to market as soon as we can,” said Tony Posawatz, Fisker Automotive’s president and CEO. “We will be bringing our own engineering footprint closer to our supplier base and the expertise and professional workforce that have driven the American automotive industry for more than a century.”
Fisker Automotive has been racking up auto industry and design awards for its flagship model, the Fisker Karma hybrid sedan, since the car went on sale last year. Plans for its second model were officially confirmed when the automaker revealed the design prototype for the Atlantic (previously referred to as “Project Nina”) at the New York International Auto Show in April.
“Fisker is an innovative high-tech and design-led company with our roots firmly in California. Our global headquarters, together with design and advanced engineering, will remain in Anaheim, but with this latest move we will benefit by having the best of both worlds,” Posawatz said.
The Atlantic will feature Fisker’s second generation trademarked “EVer” (electric vehicle + extended range) hybrid gasoline + electric engine technology. While maintaining Fisker’s luxury automotive legacy, the four-door Atlantic sedan features a practical interior and is geared toward a more cost-conscious set, families and individuals. The car is still likely to pack a premium price tag, albeit lower than the Karma’s $100,000 price point.
The company says that a signification portion of component design work has already been completed and that the new facility will implement final product development, component readiness and incorporation into final product design and production launch. The company is currently evaluating prospective locations in the Midwest region for the technical center, with more information and announcements on staffing and hiring expected in the new year.
