UCI Extension offers Spanish classes for professionals
The University of California, Irvine Extension is now offering two Spanish language courses aimed at business and healthcare professionals who are interested in developing their language skills.
The two courses, “Workplace Spanish” and “Spanish for Healthcare Professionals”, will meet the need of English-speaking professionals and facilitate basic communication with native Spanish speakers. These classes will provide real-life instructions to adapt to a different language in order to be geared toward today’s busy adult student.
“These new foreign language courses will provide professionals with the ability to speak Spanish in the workplace and communicate at a functional level. Exposure to oral communication in a real-life setting will allow participants the ability to acquire a second language and successfully prepare them to apply learned skills and vocabulary in their profession.” said Melanie Mitchell, director of management, marketing and business at UC Irvine Extension.
Each course will headed by William Harvey, a 30-year veteran of teaching Spanish and ESL and author of several books. The “Workplace Spanish” course, set to run Jan. 10 through Feb. 7, will address basic vocabulary and grammar, as well as lectures in conversational expressions, basic questions and commands. The “Spanish for Healthcare Professionals” course, set to run Feb. 21 through March 21, will offer practical healthcare-related Spanish with an emphasis on oral communication and career-specific vocabulary directed towards general health, urgent care and customer service employees.
