Kia Motors America partners with teen driving course
Irvine-based Kia Motors America and the nonprofit organization B.R.A.K.E.S. Teen Pro Active Driving Course –– Be Responsible and Keep Everyone Safe ––have partnered to provide advanced defensive driving training to 150 teenagers between 15 and 19. With a fleet of 2013 Kia Rios, B.R.A.K.E.S will offer the teens free training in how to respond to real-world scenarios in order to prevent auto accidents and save lives.
“Kia’s partnership with B.R.A.K.E.S is a reflection of the company’s commitment to give back to the communities in which we do business,” said Michael Sprague, executive vice president of marketing and communications for Kia Motors America. “Reinforcing the importance of responsible driving in the first few months of licensure is essential to reducing the number of teen motor vehicle crashes and making the roads safer for everyone.”
B.R.A.K.E.S. has provided more than 8,000 students across the United States and Canada with driving instruction. The school offers four hours of hands-on training with a low student-to-instructor ratio, ensuring focused attention. Parents also participate with their children to reinforce safe driving after the lessons.
“More than 5,000 teenagers lose their lives each year across the country in traffic accidents,” said Doug Herbert, who founded B.R.A.K.E.S. after losing his two sons in an auto accident in 2008. “The support of companies such as Kia is invaluable to reducing the number of injuries and saving lives through advanced training.”
The B.R.A.K.E.S. training curriculum includes defensive driving techniques and educates teens of how dangerous distracted driving is. Courses include an accident avoidance slalom, demonstrations of the dangers of cell phones, texts and other distractions, drop wheel/off road recovery, panic stops and car control and recovery.
