American, US Airways in $11 billion merger
American Airlines and US Airways on Thursday announced that their boards of directors approved an $11 billion merger deal, creating the world's largest airline.
The new company will be based in Dallas-Fort Worth and operate under the name American Airlines.
Officials from both airlines said the deal will allow American to emerge from bankruptcy as a larger, stronger company.
The combined airline will offer more than 6,700 daily flights to 336 destinations in 56 countries. The airline is expected to maintain all hubs currently served by American Airlines and US Airways, resulting in more travel options for customers, the companies said.
John Wayne Airport officials said they have had no talks with the airlines about what, if any, changes in service might be planned in Orange County, said airport spokeswoman Jenny Wedge.
American offers 12 daily departures from Orange County to Dallas-Fort Worth and Chicago's O'Hare International Airport.
US Airways serves Phoenix with six daily departures from John Wayne. That is a legacy service that used to be flown by America West Airlines before it merged with US Airways in 2005.
“The combination of American and US Airways brings together two highly complementary networks with access to the best destinations around the globe and gives us a strong platform to provide our customers the most connected, comfortable travel experience available," said Tom Horton, chairman and chief executive of American Airline, who will become chairman of the new company.
Doug Parker, chairman and chief executive of US Airways, said the merger would give the combined airline the scale, breadth and capabilities to better compete in the global market.
"Our combined network will provide a significantly more attractive offering to customers, ensuring that we are always able to take them where they want to travel, when they want to go,” said Parker, who will become chief executive of the new company.
