Hometown: Yorba Linda
Family: Husband, Farid Moshir; son Alexander (8) and daughter Danielle (6)
First job: Subway sandwich artist at age 17
Worst job: My first attempt at business, selling T-shirts at a swap meet, was a dismal failure.
Biggest break: Landing our first gift shop in a local casino
Secret to your success: I put people first. Everything else is secondary. The support of my family, especially my mother and my husband.
Advice to other women in business: Failure is not trying. Owning your own business can really be a 24/7 affair. We put family first, then business, and then ourselves last. It becomes a matter of priority.
Best wine for the price: Heavyweight Red Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 is a great bargain at $10.99. Pere Anselme Reserve 2009, a Syrah and Merlot blend, is another versatile table wine for under $10.
Best tip for the wine novice: A good wine is one you like. Develop your own palate. Trust your own taste, and don’t let Robert Parker or anyone else tell you what you should like.
After graduating from USC law school, Lim bought her first hotel gift shop. Since then, her business has grown to include five gift shop locations in local casinos and a hotel. After operating gift shops for more than a decade, she ventured into the liquor store business. Last year, she purchased a neglected store in the Irvine Business District. Lim’s vision was to re-create the traditional liquor store to be more upscale, modern and inviting.
OC Wine Mart has become a destination for wine tasting and a popular venue for parties. Within its first year of operation, OC Wine Mart & Tasting Bar was named by Gayot as one of O.C.’s Top 10 Wine Bars. It also is becoming a favorite among beer aficionados, with its selection of microbrews and hard-to-find beers. And the store offers a wine concierge service, which specializes in premium gift baskets, and personal and corporate gifts. It also offers local delivery and ships nationwide from the OC Wine Mart online store.
In addition, Lim has installed O.C.’s first Enomatic Wine Tasting Bar, a self-serve wine-tasting system that allows customers to taste by the ounce before they buy. Far from being a wine snob, Lim is affectionately known as the “hostess with the mostess” by her patrons.
“I wanted to create a comfortable space that is not intimidating, especially for ladies,” Lim says.
