Hometown: Laguna Niguel
Family: Husband, Jeff, and three daughters (ages 7, 5 and two weeks old!)
First job: At age 15, I worked at Gadzooks, a teenage clothing store.
Worst job: Retail! I worked several jobs at my local mall. I folded too many T-shirts! The worst part? I spent half of my paychecks on clothes!
Biggest break: When my friends started referring me to their friends. I started getting word-of-mouth clients, and my success spread quickly.
Secret to your success: 1) We genuinely care about our clients. People come back because they feel taken care of. 2) We offer such comprehensive education on e-commerce. No other Web designer offers that on the level that we do.
Advice to other women in business: Entrepreneurial women have a unique skill set. We genuinely care about what we do, and we’re not just in it for the money. My advice for women is to learn to hone your natural intuition and instincts into making good business decisions. Too often in the business world, women are looked down upon for their emotions, but some of our natural emotions and feminine intuition can be used to our advantage.
Best-designed website (other than ones you’ve worked on): This is a tough question, because I usually find flaws in all websites. But I really love the design and functionality of floryphoto.com.
With the birth of her first child in 2004, Brillhart decided she could design top-notch baby gear. So she taught herself Web design and launched MyBabyMonkey.com. Since then, she’s become one of the nation’s leading boutique Web designers.
Last year, Brillhart offered new pricing packages, including a Recession Package “so business owners could afford and feel comfortable investing in a new website.” This year, helped by a new electronic shopping-cart system, Quirky Bird has rolled out and already has more than a dozen new clients, putting it on track to triple business from 2010.
