"This initiative is the first step in making comprehensive information available electronically for all Californians," says CalRHIO's board chairwoman Molly Coye, M.D., MPH. "It demonstrates the benefits that can be achieved when state-level and local efforts work together. The Orange County community, in supporting OCPRHIO, is leading the way. Together we will improve patient care and safety, and expedite the timeline for electronic exchange of health information." OCPRHIO's use of CalRHIO's technology allows it to communicate with other doctors and hospitals statewide, as well as the national network, without having to build its own data system. The program adds to information already available to local emergency departments who work with the county's underserved population. It's a part of the Medical Services Initiative Program. By 2010, CalRHIO hopes to extend additional information to emergency departments such as medical history, laboratory data and clinical claims for patients with commercial insurance. Orange County Partnership Regional Health Information Organization is dedicated to improving the quality, safety and efficiency of health care in the region by providing better ways to capture and share health information and protect patient privacy. It is supported by the Public Health Foundation Enterprises, a nonprofit fiscal sponsor.
