The news is a positive sign for the travel industry, according to Auto Club spokesman Jeffrey Spring. “This is the healthiest holiday travel increase we’ve seen in recent memory,” he says. But numbers still haven't returned to pre-recession levels. The stats are down about 27 percent from the nearly 10 million travelers who hit the air or roads in 2006. The majority of travelers – 87 percent – will go by vehicle, while only 6 percent will go via plane. But, John Wayne Airport officials still hope for an increase in passengers during the period.
