Advanced Medical Optics product receives FDA approval

O.C.-based company’s new eye surgery product praised by UCI doctor.

Thanks to the efforts of Advanced Medical Optics, Inc. (AMO), a number of ocular surgical procedures will be easier for eye doctors and safer for their patients.

Santa Ana-based AMO, which develops and produces a variety of advanced refractive products for eye-care professionals, has received pre-market approval by the Food and Drug Administration of Healon D viscoelastic, an “ophthalmic surgical device” (OVD) used as an aid in cataract extractions, corneal transplants, intraocular lens implantation and glaucoma-filtration surgery. Healon D OVD, which coats the cornea and remains in place throughout the entire surgical process, provides exceptional clarity in the surgical field and a high degree of protection of corneal cells.

“Healon D viscoelastic will help me deliver optimal clinical outcomes for my patients,” says Dr. Roger Steinert, director of cornea, refractive and cataract surgery and vice chair of clinical ophthalmology at UC Irvine. “The Healon family of OVDs provides me with the complete range of viscosurgical tools I need during every step of cataract surgery.”

Advanced Medical Optics’ Healon products – which include standard Healon, Healon 5, Healon GV and, now, Healon D OVDs – have been used in more than 40 million eyes in the last 28 years. Because of the FDA approval, Advanced Medical Optics will introduce two “dual-pack” ophthalmic viscosurgical systems that will feature Healon D and Healon GV OVDs, as well as Healon D and standard Healon OVDs.
