The Great Anaheim Apps Challenge was kicked off Sept. 29 and has been at full throttle ever since. The contest was designed so the public could send in their ideas for mobile and Web-based applications (“apps”) designed to enhance city services, programs, entertainment and more.

Winners will be awarded more than $5,000 in cash and gift prizes for the most innovative ideas in five categories. Results will be announced on January 5, 2010.

The contest was the first of its kind on the West Coast to draw ideas directly from the public rather than from software developers.

"Technology is an integral part of everyone's lives today,” said Pringle at the outset of the challenge. “I think it's smart for local governments to tap into creative ideas from the private sector to help better serve the people. That's what we're doing with the Great Anaheim Apps Challenge."
