The Newport Beach Jazz Party

This high-energy event blends jazz and – who knows? – maybe marriage proposals.

by tamirra stewartPublished: February 01, 2012

The month of February tends to evoke visions of cupids, hearts and romance. Guys, here’s some words of wisdom: Despite the appeal of cloth tablecloths and fake grapes hanging from the ceiling, don’t propose to her in a crowded restaurant. All she’s thinking about is the crème brulee.
Instead, hold off for a couple of days and present the ring at the Newport Beach Jazz Party. The event opens Feb. 16 at the Marriott Newport Beach Hotel & Spa. It’s far more romantic for her to tell her friends that you proposed while backed by saxophones and sultry jazz.
You even have your choice of venues. Thursday’s opening night will be held in the Grand Pacific Ballroom, with the Basie, Benny & Buddy Big Band, a tribute to jazz greats Count Basie, Benny Goodman and Buddy Rich. The last artist of the evening will be a surprise; a contractual agreement requires Jazz Festival organizers to keep a lid on this one.
Or you can take it outdoors to the Pool Sessions, held Friday through Sunday afternoons. The lineup includes a Brazilian-themed jazz jam featuring many acclaimed musicians, including renowned tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton and Ken Peplowski, who played clarinet with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra.
If you’re oping for a mood involving food, the brunch on Saturday features Ernie Andrews and Houston Person, while Sunday features Barbara Morrison, whose multi-octave vocal range includes soulful blues. Nothing says love like a strong
mimosa. Or maybe that’s just me.
This will be the 12th anniversary of the Jazz Party, and the event attracts mainstream jazz fans from around the world. In addition to the two venues mentioned above, performances will be held at
Sam & Harry’s and The Ritz restaurants, as well as the Cardiff Room. The musicians are veteran and award-winning jazz performers.
So enough of the trite proposals, already. Ladies, Sam & Harry’s has crème brulee cheesecake. Just sayin’.

Alumni Guitarists in Concert
UCI Clare Trevor School of the Arts
Feb. 25
Sometimes I feel conflicted to include events that I think are cool and thus everyone else should, too. On the other hand, I think I have really good taste. Guitarists rank high on the Tamirra Cool Scale. At this concert, two of them will be playing 19th-century guitar duos on period instruments. Feel free to thank me later. studioart.arts.uci.edu
