'A Christmas Carol'

By Tina BorgattaPublished: December 01, 2009

Orange County offers a bounty of the best of holiday-inspired arts and theater this month, including a notable anniversary for South Coast Repertory’s production of “A Christmas Carol,” which is celebrating its 30th season right along with Hal Landon Jr., the longest-running Scrooge in the West.

In his three decades performing in the cast, Landon has missed only three shows. For two seasons, he even took to the stage with a broken toe.

You’ll see a lot of new faces among the many cast veterans this year – all 16 of the child performers are newcomers to the production. But Daniel Blinkoff (Bob Cratchet), Jennifer Parsons (Mrs. Cratchet), Karen Hensel (Mrs. Fezziweg) and Tom Sheldon (Marley and the Spirit of Christmas Yet-to-Come) will all take the stage in their familiar roles.

Since its founding 45 years ago, South Coast Repertory has grown to become recognized as one of the nation’s top professional theaters. In addition to presenting classic and modern theater works, SCR devotes a great deal of effort toward new-play development. And its efforts have enjoyed great success. The evidence: The SCR-developed “Wit,” by Margaret Edson, won a Pulitzer Prize in 1999, and several other works have landed nominations over the years.
