A parody with puppets

Broadway smashes are nothing new in the realm of musical theater, but they’ve become progressively rare. Musicals cost an unbelievable amount of money, and taking the show on the road requires the kind of funding in obvious short supply these days.
   
But economic turmoil isn’t preventing the producers of “Avenue Q” from bringing this eclectic hit to the U.S. The 2004 Tony Award winner for best musical, score and book, the show opened in March 2003 before transferring to Broadway in July 2004. This is the first time Orange County audiences will see this highly praised show.
   
What will local audiences see? Think “Sesame Street” meets “Rent.” Most of the characters are puppets operated by actors in full sight, and many are obvious parodies of some of the most well-beloved personalities from the long- running kids show, including Bert and Ernie, as well as the Cookie Monster.
