Catch 'The Beat'

BY Ashly McGlonePublished: July 01, 2010

The chart-topping band of the 1980s The English Beat will entertain crowds at the Orange County Great Park in Irvine on Saturday, July 17.

Simply known as The Beat in their native England, the band – which blends ska, punk and reggae – has re-emerged. Among the group’s most popular works: “Mirror in the Bathroom,” “Save it for Later” and “I Confess.” The group released three albums during their time together.

The English Beat rose to fame in the late 1970s, during a period of social upheaval in the U.K. Out of this context, the group found their voice, singing about sociopolitical topics.

Lending their musical talent to the unique fusion of sound was lead singer and guitar player Dave Wakeling, Jamaican singer Ranking Roger, saxophonist Saxa, drummer Everett Morton, guitar player Andy Cox and bass guitarist David Steele.

After The Beat’s breakup in 1983, some of the members went on to form General Public, which turned out the popular tune “Tenderness.”

Wakeling will return for the Orange County performance, which will feature vintage hits and new material by the songwriter. Tickets are $10 for general admission.
