Joseph L. Chairez

Top lawyer, philanthropist or climber sublime?

Describing Joseph L. Chairez as a philanthropic litigator might sound like the perfect oxymoron – until you meet the man.

A partner at the Costa Mesa office of Baker & Hostetler LLP, Chairez heads up the firm’s snap, hard-hitting team that handles complex business litigation, including multi-party labor and employment matters, commercial, products liability and insurance coverage litigation.

But step out of the cerebral world of a thriving practice and you find a man who has dedicated numerous hours to the advancement of his profession.State and local Bar leadership services include past presidencies at the Orange County Bar Association, Hispanic Bar Association and Celtic Bar Association. He currently sits on the State Bar Board of Governors and serves on the Justice Gap Fund Task Force, raising money to support the ideal of equal access to justice. Additionally, Chairez sits on the Executive Board of the Hispanic Education and Endowment Fund.

But near and dear to his heart is his position as board member of the El Viento Foundation. The Huntington Beach-based organization is an educational pipeline that guides underprivileged kids toward opportunities for success in life as responsible citizens through a long-term relationship based on leadership, mutual trust and respect, teamwork, learning and skills building.

Currently, Chairez is putting his money and muscle where his mouth is. On December 20, the prominent litigator begins a special philanthropic effort “Climb for Our Kids,” which includes a 10-day journey to the top of the 19,341-foot high Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa. He plans to reach the volcano’s summit on Christmas Day where he will proudly plant the El Viento banner.

“Our Climb is aimed at teaching kids how to set goals, make commitments and plans to attain those goals,” says Chairez. “Additionally, this charity climb seeks to raise $100,000 or $5 per foot to support El Viento’s efforts in Orange County.” To donate to the El Viento Foundation visit: elviento.org
