  • Robert Gerard is a shareholder of Friedman Stroffe & Gerard, P.C. (FSG); he chairs the firm’s Employment & Labor Law Practice Group and co-chairs the Sports Law Practice Group with shareholder Bryan Friedman.

Gerard and Friedman grew up hardcore “surf rats” (Friedman worked in the surf industry, and Gerard was a San Clemente ocean lifeguard supervisor prior to law school), so it is no surprise that FSG has many ocean- and surf-related clients.

With so many surf-related clients, Gerard has the opportunity to combine his professional life with his passion for surfing and travel – a harmonious fusion that prompts him to refer to himself as “the luckiest lawyer on the planet.” However, he is quick to point out that FSG is a full-service law firm that represents a variety of business clients – not all in the surf industry.

Other clients include builders, architects, banks, developers, health care companies, title insurers and even several ski/snowboard resorts. Many executives from non-surf clients are also avid surfers, which makes for a strong common bond when dealing with complex, often “landlocked” legal issues.

Gerard earned his J.D. from the University of San Diego, School of Law in 1987, where he was executive editor of the Law Review. He is active in the Orange County Bar Association (OCBA), serving as president in 2003. In 2004, he won the OCBA Business Litigation Section’s TOP GUN Trial Lawyer competition.

He is the U.S. legal counsel for the Association of Surfing Professionals and chairs the Athlete Rules & Disciplinary Committee for the ASP and is general counsel for Surfing America, the governing body for amateur surfing in North America.

Gerard recently served a two-year term as chairman of the board of directors of SurfAid International, USA, and helped raise millions of dollars for the Mentawai Islands after the ’04 tsunami. He serves on the Balboa Bay Club board of governors.
