  • The words “estate planning” usually conjure images of mega mansions and Rolls Royce cars. But attorney Brian Chew wants people to know estate planning is essential for everyone at all income levels.

“There is a common misconception that estate planning is only for the rich,” Chew says. “However, in Orange County, anyone who owns a home or has a family needs to consider creating an estate plan to make sure their family and assets are protected.”

His firm, OC Wills and Trust Attorneys, specializes in wills and living trusts, asset protection and business law.

“My goal is not simply to draft a document based on my clients filling out a form, but rather I want to make sure my client is educated about the documents,” he says. “I want them to understand the pros and cons of the choices they are making and make them aware of the alternatives so that they can make informed decisions.”

A well-planned estate is an essential part of a family’s future, he says.

“A good estate plan will help ensure that a back-up guardian is appointed for your children, avoids the high cost and delays of probate, increases the likelihood that your children are mature enough to inherit your estate and reduces or delays federal estate taxes of up to 55 percent,” Chew says. “Creating an estate plan will give you the peace of mind that your family will be taken care of in case something tragic were to happen.”

Chew hails from the San Francisco Bay Area but got his law degree from USC in 1992.

In the past, he held the titles of general counsel and business development manager before starting his own practice in 2001. He moved his practice to Irvine in 2008, where he lives with his wife and baby girl.
