Earlier this month, Irvine-based Aviir Diagnostics lent its support to a gala event in Hollywood focusing on childhood literacy. Storyland, a Red Carpet Charity Extravaganza, was held at the RISE building on Hollywood Blvd on March 16.

The event featured a Dr. Seuss theme, complete with appearances by The Lorax, as well as gourmet food, aerial dancers, celebrity appearances and a DJ. A portion of the event’s proceeds will go to Reading, Writing, it’s Exciting!, an L.A.-based nonprofit organization that dedicates its services to helping at-risk children learn to read and write.

Aviir, a biotechnology firm focused on the study, treatment and prevention of cardiovascular disease, partnered with Cause;ology, a Hollywood-based special events planning and promotions firm specializing in fundraising events for important charitable causes. Aviir’s own nonprofit foundation, Guard A Heart, is focused on increasing public knowledge on the prevention of heart disease, the number one leading cause of death in the world.

Dr. Douglas Harrington, CEO of Aviir Diagnostic Laboratories, said the event gives the organization an opportunity to promote its health lifestyle message while promoting education for children.

"It is our privilege to work in collaboration with Caus;ology to help further childhood literacy for those most vulnerable," Harrington said. "Through our support of this event we hope to raise awareness on the importance of heart disease prevention. As many as one in three kids and teens are overweight, contributing to early onset heart disease. Education is key for this highly controllable disease, and reading and writing is the foundation of any education. We are excited to be fostering literacy for children through this fun event."
