Irvine’s BlueFire Ethanol funding moves to next phase

Department of Energy approved the first part of application process and company is invited to move to next level.

Irvine-based BlueFire Ethanol Fuels Inc., a developer of transportation ethanol from non-food cellulosic wastes, announced Thursday that the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has informed the company that it has met the requirements of part one of the application process for the financing of its Lancaster Project and it has been invited to continue onto the second phase.

The loan guarantee pursuant to this program would support the construction of BlueFire's "shovel-ready" commercial (cellulosic) biofuels plant slated for Lancaster, Calif. BlueFire has requested $56 million, which would be combined with other sources to provide sufficient capital for the project's construction and launch. The permitting process has been completed and BlueFire is ready to break ground upon completion of the financing and Loan Guarantee agreements.

The Lancaster facility is designed to convert post-sorted cellulosic waste materials diverted from southern California's landfills to produce approximately 3.9 million gallons of fuel-grade ethanol per year.
