The institution teams up with local businesses to offer information and opportunities to local veterans

Brandman University’s Irvine campus is set to host its first Military Transition Career Fair on April 11. The event is a free event hoping to link local employers and businesses with military personnel transitioning to the civilian workforce.

Lawyers from the AMVETS Legal Clinic, an organization that provides free legal representation to military families and veterans, will host workshops throughout the career fair. Some of the workshops offered during the career fair include Resume Writing & Review, Internet Job Searching, Interviewing Techniques, and How to Mentally “Reboot” After Service.

The unemployment rate for veterans rose from 11.5 percent in 2010 to 12.1 percent in 2011 according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Seeing a need to help military personnel transition back to civilian life, the career fair is aimed at supporting those coming back from deployment.

“Securing employment after military service can be a challenge, especially in today’s economy, and this event was designed to support our local heroes by connecting them directly with local employers and assisting with transition skill development,” said Sgt. Maj. Chermaine Harrell, Brandman’s director of Military & Veteran Relations.

Some of the local businesses that will be represented at the career fair include County of Orange, Bank of America Kaiser Permanente, Edward Jones, Verizon Wireless, and Advantage Sales & Marketing.

“Its great to see so many Irvine companies come together to support honorable men and women who served our country, transition to the civilian workforce. I applaud Brandman University for investing in its community,” says Jeffrey Lalloway, Irvine City Councilman.

Established in 1958, Brandman University is a part of the Chapman University system, which is dedicated to serving the nations military service members, their families and veterans. The private, non-profit university serves over 10,000 students in 52 programs in the arts, sciences, business, education and health degrees annually.

Brandman’s Military Transition Career Fair takes place on April 11 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The university’s Irvine Campus is located at 16355 Laguna Canyon Road, Irvine, CA 92618.  Registration for the career fair is open to enlisted service members, veterans and their families.
