The Orange County Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure is holding its annual Breast Health Symposium this month at the Anaheim Marriott. Themed We will End Breast Cancer Forever, the event aims to improve breast cancer education and awareness, and provide an improved outlook on breast health in the Orange County community.

The symposium will showcase the differences in late-stage detection of the disease among local ethnic populations, according to a recent community assessment conducted by the organization and UC Irvine. The Komen/UCI Data Project reported that insufficient health insurance and lower socioeconomic status are primary factors for increased mortality in women with breast cancer in the region.

Dr. Hoda Anton-Culver, chairwoman of the department of epidemiology at UCI and lead researcher for the project, will also give a keynote address on the disparities in breast health education and access to services in Orange County, as well as the importance of quickly taking care of these issues.
