John Rost

Founder and president, Fiesta Auto Insurance and Tax Service

John Rost founded Fiesta Auto Insurance in 1999, and he has since grown it into a one-stop shop for insurance and tax-preparation services, with more than 70 franchise locations throughout the nation. Beyond auto and property insurance, Fiesta provides a range of coverage, including commercial general liability, Mexico and special event insurance. “On the tax-preparation side, Fiesta offers federal and state personal income tax filings, business tax returns and electronic filing and bank products, in addition to accounting and bookkeeping services,” says Rost.

When he isn’t minding the helm at Fiesta, you’ll probably find him on the ocean windsurfing or in some faraway place climbing a mountain (he’s already conquered the world’s Seven Summits).

Age and marital status: 46 and divorced, with three children – sons Alec, 16, and Chris, 14; and daughter Emily, 12

First thing you do when you get to the office: I reply to e-mails, check voicemail and return any East Coast phone calls, since I’m there so early.

Most productive time of day: It’s the mornings. It’s quiet and calm, and no one tends to be around.

Least productive time of day: Afternoons – especially when the weather is nice and the wind is blowing. My hobby is kite surfing, and the wind is an essential part of the sport.

Favorite workweek lunch spot: My office desk – I don’t like to waste a lot of time during my day.

The one business tool you can’t live without: My BlackBerry – it’s my connection to the world! E-mails, phone calls, texting, Internet. It has it all.

Most embarrassing thing you’ve said to a client: I had a momentary brain malfunction and asked, “When is Cinco de Mayo?” Hello, the fifth of May!

Most memorable mountain climb and why: They’ve all been memorable, but I would have to say Mt. Everest. After you climb the world’s tallest mountain, you quickly find out how much suffering one person can endure.

What you do to stay in shape between adventures: I work out six days a week at 5 a.m. That’s in between all my extreme adventure sports, such as climbing volcanoes in Ecuador and trekking through the Amazon.

What you’d be doing if you weren’t in your current profession: I would be the owner of a kite-boarding resort in a tropical place with eternal sunshine and afternoon wind.
