Cal State Fullerton asks: ‘Is California governable?’

A lecture series commemorating the anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution runs through the week.

The U.S. Constitution was signed on Sept. 17, 1767 and to mark the anniversary, Cal State Fullerton is hosting a series of public lectures and discussions this week, Sept. 14-17, on whether California is governable.

Elected officials, political scientists and journalists across the political and academic spectrum will be participating in the week’s events, which also explores national issues.

Monday’s lectures included, 
“Is Government the Problem?” by Robert Alt, senior legal fellow and deputy director of the Center for Legal and Judicial Studies at the Heritage Foundation; moderated by Keith Boyum, emeritus professor of political science.


“The Roberts Court, Sonia Sotomayor and the Future of Constitutional Law” was conducted by Erwin Chemerinsky, dean of the Donald Bren School of Law at UC Irvine and a scholar in constitutional law and federal civil procedure.

Today’s program included. 
“The View From City Hall,” a discussion about governing challenges at the local level with municipal leaders from throughout the Southland, moderated by Keith Boyum.

Wednesday’s program begins at 10 a.m. in Portola Pavilion, Titan Student Union. Political scientists Shaun Bowler of UC Riverside and Mat McCubbins of UC San Diego will dicuss, 
“Is the Initiative Process Broken?” Strategists/bloggers Jon Fleischman of Fleischman Group and Flashreport.org and Jeff Flint of Schubert/Flint and Red County will also debate on the initiative process.
