The treatment uses stem cells to repair cells damaged by a spinal cord injury and allow patients to walk again. It was approved by the FDA in February, and will be the first stem cell treatment to be performed in human clinical trials in the U.S. In June, Keirstead was invited to attend the Aspen Ideas Festival, a conference that gathers distinguished people to encourage intellectual exchange. The weeklong conference attracted speakers including Madeleine Albright, Bill Gates and Lance Armstrong. Keirstead was also the keynote speaker at the Translational Strategies for Tissue Engineering conference in Boston earlier this month, presenting on breakthroughs in cell-based treatments for incurable diseases, a speech that comes following CSC’s recent acquisition of a stem cell treatment program for metastatic melanoma.
