  • Chapman University garnered a $3 million gift naming the Rebecca and William Dunn Chair in honor of Nobel laureate Vernon Smith, Ph.D., a professor of economics and law at the university.

The Dunns, the donors of the gift, share a longtime friendship with Smith and his wife, Candace. Known worldwide as "the father of experimental economics," Smith pioneered the field by demonstrating that the laboratory environment allows for controlled studies of markets, rules for trading, participants' behaviors and the testing of new, innovative marketing projects. The award was announced during the recent dedication of the Vernon Smith Alcove in the Leatherby Libraries.

“We are very grateful to our new friends, Rebecca and Bill Dunn, for their visionary support of Vernon Smith, his renowned colleagues and the future of economic science,” says Chapman President James Doti.

He also calls the gift "extraordinary," saying it helps further the advancement of Chapman's Economic Science Institute, which is quickly becoming one of the leading research centers and laboratories in the U.S.

"This gift propels us to a whole new level of possibilities and promise,” continues Doti.
