![]() Santa Ana brothers Don and Dick Schmid, both civil engineers, were honored for their donation before more than 200 people at the campus-owned Villa Park Orchards Packing Plant, just a few blocks from the Orange main campus. The family’s late patriarch Walter Schmid had a long history in farming and agricultural innovation. Schmid College of Science is now the official name. Departments include biological science, chemistry, mathematics and computer science, physical therapy and psychology, and the newly formed Department of Physics, Computational Science and Engineering. The Schmid College also has graduate programs in food science and health communications. Don Schmid remarked, “What science has done is make life easier.” The event, with several new faculty members in attendance, was as much an introduction of the new college, established last spring, as a naming event. “To have this infusion of talent is so encouraging,” said Chapman President Jim Doti. “May (the college) prosper and produce graduates that make our world a better place.” The family has long supported Chapman University, including the Schmid Gate at the main entrance. A campaign for a new building is expected to begin soon. The college will benefit some 500 undergraduates and 175 graduate students, says Interim Dean Dr. Janeen Hill. The enduring challenge, she says, is, “How do we train students from the beginning?” Photo: Craig Reem |
