Orange County's manufacturing sector is expected to contract slightly in the fourth quarter, according to a survey of purchasing managers conducted by Chapman University's A. Gary Anderson Center for Economic Research.

The region's composite index is expected to drop to 49.5, down from 50.1 in the third quarter. A value above 50 shows expansion, according to the report.

There's also "no relief" on the job front: Employment in the region's manufacturing sector is expected to decrease to 38.1, down from 41 in the third quarter.

On a slightly more positive note, the seasonally adjusted index for production is projected to increase to 57, up from 55.8 in the third quarter. The news indicates that production will continue to rise through the end of 2009.
