Seal Beach-based Clean Energy Fuels Corp. has landed a 10-year contract with the Los Angeles Transit Authority – commonly referred to as METRO – to upgrade, operate and maintain compressed natural gas bus-fueling facilities in the agency’s Central and South Bay divisions.

Clean Energy – the leading provider of compressed natural gas, or CNG, for transportation in North America – will update station compressor equipment at the facilities that provide alternative fuel to the agency's fleets operating in the two divisions. The total fuel requirement for these divisions is projected to reach more than 9 million gallons annually.

In total, METRO's more than 2,500 clean-burning CNG buses comprise North America's largest CNG-powered transit bus fleet.

“We are pleased to be selected by METRO and expand our working relationship with them to support their operation of the nation’s largest clean-air bus fleet,” said James Harger, Clean Energy’s chief marketing officer. “They are the clear leader today among U.S. transit operators that are taking accelerated action to operate their bus fleets on clean-burning CNG.”

The natural gas-powered buses are more environmentally friendly because they produce fewer harmful air pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions than conventional diesel buses.

“Across America, Clean Energy is partnering with many major public transit agencies and their service providers to fuel over 5,000 buses, and to help them implement and expand their clean-fuel programs,” said Harger.

Clean Energy fuels more than 18,000 vehicles from 200 locations around the nation and in Canada.
