Costa Mesa-based Ceradyne cinches $19 million deal with U.S. Army

Company will supply its Small Arms Protective Inserts lightweight ceramic body armor.

Costa Mesa-based manufacturer Ceradyne Inc. has received an $18.7 million order from the U.S. Army for its Small Arms Protective Inserts (SAPI) lightweight ceramic body armor.

The order originated from the U.S. Army Research and Development and Engineering Command (RDECOM) at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland. It is a new contract from the agency, according to David Reed, president of North American Operations. (The company had previously announced a five-year XSAPI, which provides heightened defense, and Enhanced Small Arms Protective Inserts, or ESAPI, deal.)

“We believe that the government placed this order with Ceradyne, at least in part, due to its reliable delivery, quality performance on previous SAPI procurements and competitive pricing,” says Reed.
