![]() South Coast Plaza, which spans 2.8 million square feet, is the third largest shopping center in the United States. It is also the highest-grossing shopping center in the country, with annual sales of more than $1.4 billion. “South Coast Plaza was developed by the Segerstroms, a family with more than 100 years of history in Orange County,” says Debra Gunn Downing, executive director of marketing at South Coast Plaza. “Today, the Segerstroms remain involved in daily operations, a testament to the deep roots of the family, commitment to the community, and the enduring success of the brand.” The internationally recognized shopping destination – visited by approximately 22 million people a year – opened in 1967. Known for its selection of premium and luxury brands, the center features more than 250 stores and is home to several top names in retail, including Giorgio Armani, Louis Vuitton and Oscar de la Renta. A short distance away is the Segerstrom Center for the Arts, renamed in 2011 (it had been known as the Orange County Performing Arts Center), in recognition of the generosity and leadership of the Segerstrom family. Among the many contributions, the family donated a 5-acre site in the mid-1970s for the center’s original facility. In 2000, Henry Segerstrom donated $40 million to the center, which was the largest charitable cash gift in the history of Orange County.
