Kohl Crecelius
CEO, Co-founder, Krochet Kids

In high school, Crecelius learned to crochet from his older brother. He taught his friends, and they started making a unique line of headwear that caught on at their school. Dubbed the “Krochet Kids” by a local newspaper, the friends were encouraged to extend their business to teach people in developing countries to crochet as a means of breaking the cycle of poverty. The company began its work in war-torn northern Uganda.
After earning its nonprofit status, Krochet Kids has empowered more than 150 people in Uganda and Peru to work, receive an education, and receive mentoring to create a brighter future.
“Our success is the success of the women we work with across the globe,” Crecelius says.
One of his proudest moments was the first time he learned about a program member who had saved enough money through her time crocheting with the company to start a convenience store. She was able to create a sustainable future.
Crecelius takes pride in enabling individuals and communities to fight poverty, showing the world that a smart business model can have a great impact.
“At first, I thought the world needed something more drastic than crochet,” he says. However, his perspective has changed. Now he hopes to help grow his business model to a global scale. krochetkids.org
