![]() This private, liberal-arts college received LEED Gold certification for its two newest campus buildings, its Performing Arts Center and an academic building. Both have green roofs to provide insulation and absorb rainwater, as well as solar panels to generate electricity. Eco-consciousness pervades the campus, from the drought-tolerant plants and use of recycled water in landscaping to its Campus Environmental Committee, which is working to add more native California trees to its campus. Its students are also leading the charge to save energy, with initiatives that involve using their own reusable plastic containers for take-out food and not using trays in the cafeteria to water usage. “One of SOKA University’s founding principles is to ‘Foster leaders for the creative coexistence of nature and humanity,’” says Dr. Daniel Y. Habuki, president of Soka University of America. “We strive to create a campus environment that empowers our students, staff and faculty to propose and implement environmentally sensitive changes – and we try to set the highest standards in our campus construction.” ![]() OC METRO'S 2012 GREEN TEAM
