In just four years, Ben Byassee’s company has achieved an average revenue growth of 200 percent per year. And he’s tripled the size of his staff. Streaming Media Hosting is a content delivery network and data center operator serving nonprofit organizations and Fortune 500 companies alike.
Most important lesson learned:
I couldn’t put it any more eloquently than e. e. cummings, who noted, "The most wasted of all days is one without laughter." I try to start every day off reading the comics! Life is simply too fleeting to not look past the challenges and find the enjoyment.
Next big step:
Learning to find a healthy balance between work and play!
Advice for other young professionals:
Finding the right people to build a productive team can be a challenge. You may need people with potential you can develop, seasoned people with experience, someone to take the lead, etc. Figuring out your priorities to determine the roles you need is essential, as is understanding personalities that are compatible or conflict with your corporate culture. Sometimes a person isn’t the right fit for a team. Acknowledging that as soon as possible can save a lot of wasted effort trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. While this may initially be difficult to address, in the long run everyone will be better off.
What you do for fun:
Learning new things! Most recently I’ve spent my time learning to sail, take better photographs, play piano and weld.
If you could have dinner with anyone – alive or dead – who would it be and why?
There are certainly myriad fascinating people I would enjoy having dinner with, but none more than my parents. Throughout my childhood, they dedicated themselves to helping others, and when I turned 19, they emigrated to Latin America and devoted themselves to missionary work. We don’t get to see each other often, but when we do, their dedication and perspective are a wonderful reminder of how many ways a person can make a difference in other people’s lives, and success can be measured.
