John E. Stratman Jr.’s profile begins with golf. His grandfather took him under his wing when he was 8 years old, after his father died, and taught him how to play golf. It turned into something more than just a weekend activity – he earned a four-year varsity letter in golf at Mater Dei and then played for the Chapman University golf team.
And here’s where the business part comes in. “(It) is a sport that requires people to have patience, vision, strategy and a sense of humor – all important aspects of business,” he says.
At 21, Stratman was appointed by then-governor Pete Wilson to the California Postsecondary Education Commission. (He has more than 15 years in public and government affairs behind him.) He was elected as the youngest president of a Rotary Club and served four years as chairman of The Raise Foundation, Orange County’s official child-abuse- prevention organization.
