JENNIFER BACKHAUS
Founder and artistic director of Backhausdance, school director of the California Conservatory of Dance and adjunct professor at Chapman University
Jennifer Backhaus is renowned choreographer whose Backhausdance is an award-winning, O.C.-based contemporary dance company. And so far, she’s brought a great deal of attention to Orange County’s dance community. Her work has been performed at The Kennedy Center, and she has been honored by Regional Dance America.
Most important lesson learned:
Know what you are really good at, and find ways to keep doing it.
Next big step:
Increasing the community presence and outreach of Backhausdance in the O.C., and getting our work seen on a national level.
Advice for other young professionals:
Keep doing what you are passionate about, even when it is not easy. Payment and reward for a job well done does not always come in the form of cash.
What you do for fun:
Spend time with my pug dog, R2D2, drink good wine and play golf.
If you could have dinner with anyone – alive or dead – who would it be and why?
My grandmother Merel West – she was an incredibly strong and intelligent woman. She is the reason I was able to go to Chapman University and meet the people who would impact my life in significant ways. I would hope that she would be proud of me, and I know we would have a fantastic chat!
