TIMOTHY YOUNG
Founder and CEO of Socialcast
Though he’s only 27, Timothy Young has been an entrepreneur for eight years and carries more than a decade of knowledge in Web development. Before founding Socialcast – a social networking platform and solutions provider – Young started a company called Event Robot and developed online communities for brands such as Guitar Center, Vans and Universal Music Group.
Most important lesson learned:
As an entrepreneur, you must choose your team and partners wisely. Find people who will protect and enhance your vision as if it were their own, and be wary of anyone who tries to sway you.
Next big step:
Since we’ve just received a Series A round of venture capital, we’re taking our team to San Francisco to aggressively ramp up product development and sales.
Advice for other young professionals:
New company founders should surround themselves with other entrepreneurs and the best employees, partners and mentors they can find. Use this trusted group as an incubator for ideas, and always be willing to give more than you take.
What you do for fun:
As much fun as I have doing research and work for my company, I also enjoy reading (Barry Eisler is a current favorite), relaxing at home with my wife, traveling to Napa and Sonoma for some wine tasting and driving around Southern California’s best scenic roads.
If you could have dinner with anyone – alive or dead – who would it be and why?
E.O. Wilson – he’s one of the greatest biologists of our time. A lot of his research can be applied to understanding human social systems, and that’s an area of research that is intriguing to me.
