So it was perhaps natural that when Moodian invited the Republican gubernatorial candidates to a debate, he used Twitter. The October 2009 event between Tom Campbell and Steve Poizner at Brandman University was the first major political debate incorporating the social media site. People tweeted questions in advance, and audience members tweeted reactions to the candidates’ answers, which were displayed in real time to the auditorium. “The most important aspect of American politics is participation,” says Moodian, who moderated two of Orange County’s three major debates so far for the 2010 election. “To us, (using Twitter) was a way to enable citizens to participate in a unique way, and to involve a younger demographic.” OC METRO's 40 Under 40
