TERENCE NELSON
Assistant dean of counseling services and special programs at Saddleback College
Though he may be a decade younger than many administrators at Saddleback College and a quarter century younger than the average community college administrator, 31-year-old Terence Nelson is already hard at work bringing the technology of today’s fast-paced world to Saddleback students. But that’s not his only mission; Nelson is also responsible for managing millions in grant money and allocations, along with managing faculty, staff and several student programs.
The most important lesson learned:
Hard work and perseverance are still rewarded in our country. It may take longer than you plan to reach your goals, but if you continue to plug away, a strong work ethic will eventually pay off.
The next big step:
My next big step is the full implementation of the Veterans Education and Transition Services (VETS) program at Saddleback College. Many of our country’s best and brightest are returning home in the next few years, and with the implementation of the Post 911 GI Bill, our post-secondary institutions must be prepared for this wonderful opportunity. I want to play my part in molding America’s next “Greatest Generation.”
Advice for other young professionals:
It may sound cliché, but follow your passion. Compensation comes in many forms, not just monetarily.
What you do for fun:
Hike and run, usually after my 14-month-old son
If you could have dinner with anyone – alive or dead – who would that be and why?
My wife, Alicia. She is the love of my life and has been since the day we met.
