SCOTT CROSS
Founder and president of SC Homes Inc.
Scott Cross builds million-dollar estates in coastal areas of Southern California, with a focus on the Newport Beach area. He founded his SC Homes in 2002 at the age of 22. And most recently, he became the youngest builder to work on “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” in the show’s six-year history. Watch our 40 Under 40 video feature for more on Cross.
Most important lesson learned:
Management, organization and personality are the keys to success. By a simple plan of management and delegating the proper people for the job, your business will prosper. Without organization, you cannot succeed. I called the “Extreme Makeover” project “organized chaos.” Without a personality and morals, you cannot get new clients or keep the old ones. Keeping the project fun and exciting for clients and employees keeps the process moving productively.
Next big step:
My next big step would have to be the simple objective of increasing my client list and increasing volume.
Advice for other young professionals:
Never let the worry of being too young get in your way. By experience and dedication, you will surpass that. Stay true to yourself and what you stand for. As my father always told me regarding being my own business owner, “Pretend you have a boss. What would your boss think of you and your performance?”
What you do for fun:
My family means the world to me, so being home with my wife and my 7-month-old son is all I need to have fun.
If you could have dinner with anyone – alive or dead – who would it be and why?
Frank Lloyd Wright would be ideal for me. Although, I have many other architects I admire, such as Brion Jeanette, Mark Singer, Ian Harrison and Mark Gross, I would love to meet the man who changed the perspective on living in nature. Although I am not an architect myself, I am inspired by architects and what they create. My job is to build their amazing creations.
