The bacon craze may have just taken off, but for entrepreneur Scott Slater, it’s old news. His restaurant Slater’s 50/50 pioneered a bacon menu that includes a federally trademarked burger with 50 percent ground bacon, bacon mac ’n’ cheese, bacon-wrapped wings, baconnaisse sauce, bacon salt and bacon brownies. This led to a recent spot on Travel Channel’s “Bacon Paradise” show.
“To the best of my knowledge, we are the only gourmet burger concept that is centered around community and locals,” says Slater, who previously owned a hot dog cart business that flourished in front of 36 Home Depot stores nationwide, including four in Orange County. “Most other of these gourmet burger spots are popping up in urban business centers and tourist locations. We are in the heart of suburbia and ... are extremely active with local schools, churches and youth sports.”
