What you like most about being a designer: “Freedom and creativity”

For 15 years, Barclay Butera has been redefining home luxury for such big-name celebs as Renée Zellwegger, Sharon Stone and Barbra Streisand. His creativity has even earned him appearances on “Extra!” and “The Today Show,” among other programs. But his roots in the industry stretch back to his childhood: He grew up watching his mother build an interior design firm from the ground up. Still, it’s not a career he originally set out for.

In college, Butera studied political science and economics, with aspirations of attending law school. After trying his hand at law for a year, Butera felt his creativity being stifled. So, he dropped out of law school and joined the family business, and in 1989, he opened his mother’s Southern California office in Corona del Mar. Now, he has his own home-design showrooms in Newport Beach; Park City, Utah; and New York.

Butera credits his personality for his international success: “When you do interiors, you’re almost like a therapist for the home,” he says.

Butera is inspired by the fashion world – color combinations and palettes – and the architectural styles he’s seen traveling the globe.

Among his recent achievements: a line of textiles for the prestigious Kravet Collections, a coffee table book titled “Living in Style,” and an upholstery and a pillow collection for the Hearst Castle Collection. He also served as the creative director for a $25 million renovation of the historic L’Auberge resort in Del Mar.

When he’s able to slow down and unwind, Butera enjoys the simple pleasures in life: quality time with friends, a walk in the park and dining out.

Meet Luke Hodsdon, OC METRO's director of design, and check out some of his work.
