Q: What was your big breakthrough?
A: I have a lot of Hollywood clientele. I think that’s a very good sign of a designer. Sometimes it’s a difficult balance, working with someone who is extremely high profile and making sure that you understand that person and that person understands you. With any client there is a balancing act. I call it “yours, mine and ours.” It’s really a collection of clients, and each partner and me coming in and being the editor and mediator. So I would say that the biggest breakthrough is working with Hollywood and having opportunities to be very well known on the East Coast. I’m probably just as well known in New York as I am in Orange County – to be a national designer, instead of just a regional designer.

Q: What was your biggest failure?
A: I won’t say failure when you’re naïve. What I did was grow very fast. But growing fast isn’t necessarily the best thing to do.

Q: Who or what inspires you?
A: I’m definitely inspired by fashion, and I’m inspired by travel. I really absorb those kinds of things: colors and how people dress and combine their colors. When I travel, spectacular architecture and museums (are an inspiration).

Q: What is your biggest goal or dream for the future?
A: To have more free time.

Q: What one piece of advice would you offer aspiring designers?
A: I love what I do. And I think it’s important. You can go to school as long as you want; it doesn’t create an interior design. Loving what you do and developing your tastes through the process truly is your own education. Make sure you love what you do and make sure you find your niche. I think you can be successful just finding your niche.
