Mobile applications designer Matt Tubergen Co-founder of Azomob Cypress
Biggest
failure: “Earlier in my career, there have been times when I didn’t
listen to clients closely, which ultimately resulted in a mediocre
design.”
If there’s an app for that, you can probably
thank Matt Tubergen. Running operations for the company he founded with
business partner Brian Hong, Tubergen may not consider himself to be a
designer, but he’s the man behind the mobile marketplace.
It
may seem like an unlikely career path for Tubergen, who studied vocal
music and audio engineering in school. But he found interest in the
field of visual design, and in his first job out of school, Tubergen
went to work running production for American Greetings, creating and
designing all of its mobile content.
Then he went to work
for one of the original ringtone companies, THQ, designing and
developing ringtones and wallpaper for the mobile platform. Most
recently, he ran the company’s personalization department, where he was responsible for all the non-game content for large brands such as LucasArts.
He also repurposed images, videos and animations of Star Wars characters for applications featuring Yoda and Hans Solo.
It
was at THQ that Tubergen met Hong. Seeing the upsurge in demand for
phone applications, the pair founded Azomob in March. The team works
with branded companies to publish iPhone applications and supports
platforms for Android, BlackBerry and some Samsung phones.
Azomob
landed its first big deal with Pixar Studios during the launch of the
film “Up,” creating a promotional application for the movie, including
videos, short clips and trailers.
Recently, the company
launched Snoop Dogg’s application, the iFizzle, complete with signature
Snoop Dogg lingo. During an appearance on “The Tonight Show with Conan
O’Brien,” the rapper was seen holding his iFizzle.
And the company has already grown; Azomob now has a second office in Minneapolis, where Tubergen spends half of his time.
